The Australian Cattle Dog can thank his existence to cattle-breeding. Australia, due to its dry climate is less suitable for farming, so the stock-raising was the most developed branch of agriculture. The extensive cattle-breeding in the northern, more humid areas (Queensland, the Northern area) is flourishing. The Australian Cattle Dog slowly transferred from the farms to the cities, where new tasks were given to them. Many people loves the Australian Cattle Dog in their home country, because they are suitable for work and many sports.

In Queensland, 1840, George Elliott started to breed dogs. Elliott was very satisfied with the results as the dogs were very helpful and were suited for a lot of different tasks. The neighbours from other farms were also impressed by the capabilities of these animals, and soon everyone wanted a puppy from George. Soon Mmre and more people came from distant places because they have heard of these hardworking dogs.

Two brothers, Jack and Harry Bagust, also bought puppies and took them to Sydney. Their purpose was to refine the properties of dogs. As a first step, they have crossed a female and a newly imported dalmatian from Ireland. The Bagust brothers wanted to achieve that dogs would instinctively love the horses, and also to be able to respect their owners. The new breeding direction has proven useful as the dogs were getting used to the horses, but at the same time, their ability to work was somehow lost. The color of the dogs was also changed, and the new puppies had blue and red spots.

The Australian Cattle Dog
After a few tries, the brothers have accomplished their goals. As a result, a highly active dog was born similar to the dingos: the Australian Cattle Dog. There were appearance changes again though: the blue dogs had a black patch around the eyes and a small white marking appeared on their foreheads. The color of their eyes was brown at this time. These dogs had outstanding working ability. The Australian Cattle Dog inherited the instinct to always “attack” the feet. Their loyality definitely comes from the dalmatian-line.

Lovely Australian Cattle Dog
A lot of people sympathize with the Australian Cattle Dog, mainly because of his loving nature.
This is great, although you have to be aware of their perpetual motion. You will have to take them to a walk at least every second day, and be prepared for their exceptional energy. They can get a lot of joy to the families who are fans of agility, obedience, tracking or weight pulling.
